DR. MICHAEL FERNANDO
Oncologist
Dr. Michael Fernando is a medical oncologist with a special interest in breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and lung cancer.
After graduating from Monash University in 2015, he completed his physician training at Bendigo Hospital and Geelong Hospital. As an oncology trainee, he has worked at Eastern Health, Northern Hospital in Epping, and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre. He earned his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2022.
After gaining his letters, Dr. Fernando completed a research fellowship in early-phase trials and head and neck cancer. He also works at the Northern Public Hospital, where he coordinates the Symptom and Urgent Response (SURC) service.
Dr. Fernando is a lifelong student of his profession. He prides himself on his compassion and holistic approach to oncology, always striving to stay at the forefront of his ever-changing field. His commitment to research and education is a particular passion. He co-hosts the popular podcast Oncology for the Inquisitive Mind, which covers the latest oncological research and keeps his audience informed and up-to-date. He is a member of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA), the Thoracic Oncology Group Australasia (TOGA) and the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate (ANZUP) trials group.
In his free time, Michael loves hiking, music, honing his skills as a novelist, and enjoying the company of his wife, Monika, and his Labrador, Beans.
